Hi There, I’m Jess
It was 2009 when, as a highly stressed college student, I started breaking out in red, oozy, painful patches on my face and arms. As the weather cooled, my skin just kept getting worse. That younger version of me, her self-esteem, was absolutely crushed. All the doctors I had seen kept saying it was “just genetics.” Like I was destined to be broken. I was left feeling like there was no way out of this cracked itchy skin – I felt trapped.
Fast forward about six years, and I had been diagnosed with two inflammatory skin disorders: Nummular Eczema and Seborrheic Dermatitis. I graduated from pharmacy school and was working as a clinical pharmacist. I had been using standard medical advice to deal with the symptoms, but it wasn’t really working. I was worried I might need something stronger to keep this inflammation at bay. The problem with being a pharmacist though was that I knew all of the side effects of the available drugs. I knew that they worked by suppressing my body’s natural defenses. And, I knew how much these drugs cost. I didn’t want those options for myself, or any of the patients I saw struggling with similar symptoms. Honestly, I couldn’t wrap my head around it. My gut instinct kept telling me there had to be a better way. We couldn’t all just be broken. What the hell was causing this?
So, I started digging into the research. And I saw a clear connection between diet, gut health, and autoimmune disease. I went back to school; became a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and a Restorative Wellness Practitioner. I ordered my lab tests and created my healing protocol – tailored to what my body needed. Through this journey, I discovered that the answer to painful inflammation all starts in the gut. I learned that just cutting out gluten or going through an elimination diet is ineffective because each persons’ triggers are different (which is why testing over guessing is the basis of my practice). I also learned that my gut instinct was spot on. There is a better way. And, finally, I learned the most powerful medicine of all has been right under our noses this whole time: it’s in the food.
